South Florida is a huge home for the Swifties, and South Florida Daily studio is no different! Here is a power ranking of our host Megan Hayes & producer Valerie Rodriguez’s top 5 favorite song on new album The Life of a Showgirl & why they made the cut.
Megan’s List (Estimated # of Album Listens as of posting this - 7)
- Fate of Ophelia - Our girl is in love, simply put. This sets the tone for the entire album...we are here for fun, happiness, pure bliss! She has found her forever love and he’s swept her off her feet and saved her from tragedy, unlike Hamlet’s character. I would argue that the music video for this song is one of Swift’s most creative works yet.
- Father Figure - I’m still decoding this one but I believe Swift is taking back her voice (figuratively and literally) after buying back her masters. This one feels pointed at some men who may have wronged her...is this The Man 2.0? I like to think so. Every few albums, she has to drop one of these songs just to keep everyone in check and remind them - she’s in charge of her life. The stereotypical power dynamic isn’t so typical when it comes to working with her...
- Elizabeth Taylor - You want to slow dance in a ballroom at the beginning of this song and then BOOM! It turns into an absolute banger. It’s giving me Reputation vibes. I love the ode to the queen Elizabeth Taylor and explores the similarities between the actress and Swift. Plus, my grandma wore White Diamonds perfume...nostalgia!
- Opalite - We all have those relationships we just can’t shake...even Taylor Alison Swift! The lyrics - “my brother used to call it eating out of the trash” made me absolutely GIGGLE the first time I heard it. This is the song that I am dancing around the kitchen to when I’m drinking white wine and making dinner (a.k.a. watching my husband make dinner). Also, am I picking up on some Fourth Wing references? Lightning strikes, onyx night...you good, @ Rebecca Yarros?
- Wi$h Li$t - Maybe it’s because I’m 3 months postpartum but the line - “got me dreaming about a driveway with a basketball hoop” - had me ALL in my feels. Ok, it’s definitely because I’m 3 months postpartum. But after years of albums with heartbreak and angst, this song feels like a breath of fresh air! Swift is happy, in love, and excited about a future with someone she truly cares about. I LOVE LOVE. Babies and basketball hoops - WOW, I’m getting soft in my old age, but apparently so is she.... *insert heart eyes*
Valerie’s List (Estimated # of Album Listens as of posting this - 9)
- Wood - This is my favorite song on the album because it’s the catchiest. I love the Jackson 5 sample/homage in the beginning! I also love that it is such a strong departure from what some would say is “Good Girl” Taylor Swift. She’s a woman, she’s loved, she’s happy and this song definitely shows it. Plus, the “New Heights of Manhood” is such a hilarious line. Honestly, this track has so many FUNNY lines. It’s sooo good 10/10
- Cancelled! - As a new Swiftie (3 years deep), this song tickles me. I used to be (still am just toned down a bit) a heavy Beyonce fan so this song had me puzzled. Because obviously Taylor was “cancelled” when Kim Kardashian leaked that edited phone call but that was a while ago...And this song didn’t sound like it was about who I originally thought it was about. None-the-less, this song gives me Reputation Vault Track vibes and that’s why I love it and put it at number 2.
- The Life of a Showgirl - Obviously, I had to put the album title track on here pretty high on the list. I think the beginning is a little cheesy, but it has a pretty fun build up that I love. I’m also a huge Sabrina Carpenter fan, and the relationship she and Taylor developed during the eras tour has been so fun to follow. This song is like the ultimate culmination of that. Plus, Sabrina absolutely KILLS the vocals on this song. “She was a menace” rings over and over in my head!!
- The Fate of Ophelia - This track reminds me of Folklore, it’s giving old Taylor! It was a great song to open the album on in my opinion. I was at a midnight release Taylor Swift party, so hearing THIS cut into a bar’s music wasn’t expect. I was expecting a lot more of an upbeat album to be honest but after listening to the album a few more times and really digesting it all. I love it. It’s interesting and complex! The visuals are stunning. And there’s a ton of great metaphors, little Taylor-isms to look into.
- Opalite - Although this is my FAVORITE upbeat track on the album, it ranks number 5 for me. I just prefer some of the other tracks over this for some reason. But this is the song I can see people dancing and vibing to the most. It’s catchy, it’s fun, the backtrack is good, it’s a good song! Someone said this song feels like Taylor Swift is finally loving with anxiety and, I just LOVE that for her you know. And again, just a lot of cute little metaphors and Taylorisms about her current love life that I am absolutely tickled by.
