The Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County (SWA) is lacing up for a cause with the return of its Run AWAY 5K! It’s a trail run and walk designed to boost awareness of recycling and solid waste issues while raising funds for Resource Depot, the county’s only nonprofit focused on reuse.
The event takes place Saturday, April 5, with a 7:30 a.m. start at the Palmetto Trailhead of the SWA Greenway Trail System. Participants can expect a scenic course through cabbage palms, cypress hammocks, marshes and pine flatwoods, with views of Grassy Waters Preserve and the Renewable Energy Park.
In addition to the race, attendees can support two SWA initiatives on event day:
- Lithium battery disposal: Lithium batteries are a serious fire hazard when handled improperly. Participants are encouraged to tape the terminals with clear tape and bring batteries to the race for safe disposal.
- Plastic Bag Xchange2 Program: To help keep plastic bags out of curbside recycling, bring two clean, empty single-use plastic bags to the event and receive two reusable recycling bags to help sort materials before they go into curbside bins.
All pre-registered participants will receive a commemorative medal and race shirt, and awards will be presented to top male and female finishers across multiple age categories. Not an early riser? The Sleep-In Virtual 5K offers the same swag for those who prefer to participate on their own schedule!
Registration
- Race Day: $40
- Youth (10 and under): $15
- Sleep-In Virtual 5K: $25
Proceeds benefit Resource Depot, which has spent nearly 25 years “turning waste into wonder” by inspiring creativity, conservation and community engagement through reuse. Sponsors include Resource Depot and Grassy Waters Preserve.
